INTERVIEW WITH GIUSEPPE LANCI

There are Italian cinematographers who have left an indelible mark on the history of world cinema. Precursors of time who in their work measured light first with their gaze, instinct and then with the exposure meter. There exists in these personalities a devotion to the sacredness of the image, where light remains the foundational material.

For Eki 04 – Spiritual Light, we interviewed Giuseppe Lanci, who has been able to make light a means of expression, revealing to us how much life can mark us and influence one’s way of telling a story.

Giuseppe Lanci (Rome, May 1, 1942) is director of photography and since 2014 professor in charge of the photography course at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome. Throughout his career, many were the artistic partnerships such as with Andrej Tarkovskij, Marco Bellocchio, the Taviani family, and Nanni Moretti. A master of light and dark, his creativity is conditioned by a strong humanistic approach, which is reflected in the images he constructs. Astonishing inner atmospheres emerge and manifest themselves in a cinematic narrative in which his role as director of photography is at the complete service of the story.
